The line and the three widths
Draw a light horizontal line and mark three equal widths on it: eye, gap, eye. That middle gap is the rule that keeps the face from looking off.

Eyes, front view
Eyes are the first thing anyone looks at, and the first thing that gives away a crooked drawing. Here you build them in layers: the box first, then the lid, and only at the end the highlight that brings them alive. The rule that holds it together: exactly one eye fits between the two eyes.

- An HB pencil for the guides and a 2B for the lid and pupil. Eraser and smooth paper. Keep the guides very light: they get erased at the end.
